Army 2017 was held at “Patriot” in August 22-27. This year, the Russian Ministry of Defense held a similar large-scale event for the third time. Traditionally, the military department brings here all the best it has. However, not only it – almost all the leaders of the Russian military-industrial complex try here at the main army forum of the country to show their best products, arrange memorable exhibitions, hold demonstrations and conduct master classes.
This year, the forum guests were surprised by both the format of the events and the volume of the exhibition, as well as the dynamic program. The number of international guests also broke a record.
One of the highlights of this forum was the exhibition of captured weapons seized from ISIS fighters (the organization is banned in Russia). Everyone was able to get acquainted with the samples used in Syria by terrorists. Previously, these objects were exhibited in one of the most closed “museums” in the world – at the Russian air base in Syrian Hmeimim. Now anyone who came to the “Patriot” could see this in Russia.
The Army 2017 forum showed leaders in sales of Russian weapons. “Army 2017” presented the look of a modern battle. Spectators were able to watch the attack of the tank brigade, the landing of the parachute assault group behind enemy lines, the work of the new generation of Boomerang armored personnel carrier. By the way, so far, this secreted car could only be seen at the Victory Parades.
After the destruction of ISIS facilities in Syria, world interest in Russian weapons increased. Permanent pavilions appeared at Almaz-Antey, the United Shipbuilding Corporation, Rostec, Kalashnikov Group, and in general, all the leaders of the Russian defense industry.
This year, NATO countries were on the list of the forum participants. The briefing, organized on the eve of the forum for representatives of army departments from around the world, was attended by army officials from the UK, France, Canada, Estonia, and other countries.
The current forum has surpassed the previous ones in multiple ways. For example, the area of expositions amounted to 300 thousand square meters compared to 140 thousand in previous years. Nearly 19 thousand weapons and military equipment were presented – in 2015 there were 7 thousand only.
The universality of the entire Patriot and the Army forum, in particular, is that thy show the actions of troops in all environments – in the sky, on earth, on water. On Komsomolskoye Lake, a show was held with the participation of anti-sabotage services and the latest underwater robotic systems. Some of them received a baptism of fire in Syria: they examined the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea in the area of our base in Tartus.
During the Army 2017 forum, Russian enterprises managed to conclude contracts for the supply of their products to enterprises for a record amount of over 25 billion euros. For several consecutive years, Russia occupies 25% of the global arms market, being second only to the United States. The military operation in Syria provoked a new surge in world interest in Russian weapons. At the Army 2017 forum, Russian enterprises awarded contracts for the supply of military products for a record amount of over 25 billion euros. The exhibition was attended by about a hundred foreign delegations, more than 1,200 defense enterprises. Army 2017, according to experts, is in serious competition with the largest arms exhibition in Europe – Eurosatory.

The reasons for the interest in ASTROHN production are clear. All advanced armies aim their concept of warfare at conducting military operations at night, due to the available technologies that make it possible to see at night as during the day. The current main adversary – terrorists in third world countries – does not have these technologies. So, if you fight at night, and your opponent does not see anything, then he has no chance to win. Therefore, the American army has more than 500 thousand thermal imaging devices for various purposes, of which more than 300 thousand are sights.
In 2017, ASTROHN Technology Ltd launched 384×288 and 640×480 microbolometric detectors with a pixel size of 17 μm and a temperature sensitivity of 60 mK and 40 mK. The reduced pixel size gives several advantages to new detectors: improved spatial resolution (the ability to distinguish details and detect objects at large distances); smaller detector dimensions, more compact design of the thermal imaging module; increasing image quality by reducing the effect of aberrations. New thermal imaging detectors will also be used for the production of ASTROHN-384A17 and ASTROHN-640A17 thermal imaging modules – one of the latest developments of the ASTROHN Technology Ltd. The above listed features allow reducing the size and weight of the optoelectronic system built on the basis of ASTROHN thermal imaging modules. For unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) this means more time and flight range, for a fighter – the reduced weight of equipment, for robotics – longer battery life and reduced overall dimensions.
